The list is owned by Standard & Poorâs and is also compiled (hence the second name of this indicator: S&P500). The index is published since March 4, 1957. The base period for the calculation was taken in 1941-1943, the initial value was 10. Shares of all companies included in the S&P 500 list are traded on the largest US stock exchanges, such as NYSE and NASDAQ. The value of the S&P500 index reflects their total capitalization (since 2006 it was adjusted to free float). The S&P 500 Index competes in popularity with the Dow Jones Industrial Average and is deservedly called the barometer of the American economy. The S&P 500 list is not the same as the list of the largest US corporations: mainly, there are privately-owned companies and companies with the high-liquidity shares.
